Senior Software Engineer

About us

SelectScience is a specialist scientific publisher and digital marketing business, connecting scientists with trusted information, expert content, and leading suppliers. You will join a collaborative team at an exciting point in our growth, with the chance to shape products that improve how scientists find, use, and trust digital content and essential products.

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to take a leading, hands-on role as we deliver an ambitious product roadmap to evolve our digital product experience.

Alongside the continued development of our main website and our client reporting and analytics system, we are bringing new products to market with AI capability built in from the outset. This is a rare opportunity to deliver new products from an early stage rather than inherit them, in a small team where your technical judgement is essential to our success and will carry real weight.

You will own significant pieces of work end to end, from shaping the approach with the team, through implementation, to release and support in production. You will need to be pragmatic and comfortable with breadth, moving between a content-heavy editorial platform, a data-oriented analytics application, and greenfield product work.

What you will be working on

We have an ambitious roadmap of new products for the scientific community, with AI integrated as a core part of the proposition. You will be involved from early definition through to launch, helping to make the architectural and technical choices that these products are built on.

Our client reporting and analytics system provides our commercial clients with visibility of their marketing campaign performance. Developments you will work on will integrate AI capability for our clients into this system and reimagine it for the agentic era. Work here is data- and interface-focused, presenting complex datasets clearly, concisely, and with flexibility according to the needs of our clients.

Our main website is a Next.js and React application hosted on Vercel, with content managed in our CMS. New product work spans new feature development to incorporate AI and streamlined customer journeys. Ongoing developments include continued SEO and GEO performance improvements, and the front-end experience for a large audience of scientific professionals.

Our products sit within a wider ecosystem. You might also be building and maintaining integrations with HubSpot, Salesforce and Monday.com, among others, working with third-party APIs, webhooks and authentication flows, and handling the failure modes that come with them as needed.

We are introducing Databricks as our unified data platform. You will need to understand how our applications interact with data from it and work effectively alongside that architecture as it also rapidly iterates.

What you will do

  • Design, build and ship features across new products, the client reporting system, and the main website.
  • Take technical ownership of areas of the codebase including architecture decisions, technical debt and long-term maintainability.
  • Integrate AI capability into customer-facing products.
  • Work with the team to break down roadmap work into deliverable increments and provide realistic estimates.
  • Write, maintain, and support automated unit and integration tests as a normal part of delivery.
  • Review code and technical designs and help evolve our engineering standards and development practices across the whole team.
  • Build and maintain integrations between our platforms and third-party systems.
Contribute to our branching and release strategy, CI/CD pipelines, observability and incident response.
  • Use AI-assisted development in a pragmatic and responsible manner, remaining accountable for the code that AI produces.
  • Support production systems, investigate issues, and see fixes through to resolution.

Essential skills and experience

  • At least 5 years of commercial experience as a software engineer, with a track record of delivering and owning production systems.
  • Strong React and TypeScript, including modern patterns, state management, and component design.
  • Production experience with Next.js, including a solid grasp of the rendering models (SSR, SSG, ISR, client-side) and when to reach for each.
  • Experience deploying and operating applications on Vercel.
  • Experience integrating with third-party REST and/or GraphQL APIs, including authentication, webhooks, rate limits, and error handling.
  • A disciplined approach to automated testing, with real experience of unit and integration testing in a continuously delivered codebase.
  • Practical experience of AI-assisted development, specifically with Claude Code, and a considered view of where agentic coding tools help and where they need close supervision.
  • Confident with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines, and with releasing frequently and safely.
  • Good judgement on performance, accessibility, and security in front-end applications.
  • Able to work independently and own delivery, while communicating clearly with less
  • technical colleagues across editorial, marketing and commercial teams.

Desirable

  • Experience building product features with agents, including context management, security, evaluation, cost, and latency management, and handling non-deterministic output responsibly.
  • Experience with a headless CMS.
  • Experience with CRM and marketing and analytics platforms such as HubSpot,
  • Salesforce, Google Analytics, and their APIs and data models.
  • Experience with SQL and relational databases.
  • Experience building data-rich interfaces, namely dashboards for analytics and data visualisation.
  • Awareness of modern data platforms such as Databricks and how applications interact with them.
  • Experience of technical SEO and GEO on a large content site.

How we work

  • A small, close technical team where individual contribution is visible and matters. We have a development partner that works as a seamless part of that single team, with shared standards, shared code review, and shared ownership.
  • Hybrid working, mostly remote, with one day a week together in the office near Bath.
  • We use AI tooling seriously, deliberately, and safely in our own development process, and we expect engineers to help us keep improving how we use it.

Right to Work

Applicants must have the existing right to work in the UK. We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this role.
